Growing Conditions
Buxus sempervirens, also known as the common box, grows in a variety of conditions and can handle sunny and shady locations. Outdoor plants will require water during the growing season, even though they have access to rain. They are very dense plants, and the rain must be heavy for enough to make it to the soil. Indoor plants will be completely reliant on you for care, so check the soil daily until you know how quickly it dries and have a schedule established.

The plants will require far less water during the winter, though be careful to not let the soil become dry. Dropping the container into a bucket for a good soak once a week, especially should the soil begin separating from the wall of the container, should be sufficient for the growing season. A 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer can be added to the water 2-3 times during the growing season, if the plant begins to look worn out.

Re-potting
Buxus plants grow naturally along chalk and lime deposits. Thus it is essential to keep potting soil on the basic side. Each season you will want to remove the buxus to make sure the container is 2-4 centimetres bigger than the root ball. Up to a third of the root ball can be pruned and replaced with compost and slow release fertilizer.
