Peonies, a plant belonging in the genus Paeonia, is named after Paeon. In Greek mythology, Paeon was the gods’ physician. He was a student of Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing. He was turned into a peony flower by Zeus to save him from the wrath of Asclepius who became jealous of him.

In Indiana, a law was passed in 1957 to declare it the “State Flower of Indiana.”

Peonies are also very common as a tattoo subject. Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a famous Japanese artist, associated the flower with a devil-may-care attitude in his paintings of warrior-heroes covered with peony, lion, dragon, tiger and coy fish tattoos.
